NINE SONS OF THE DRAGON KING

A notable work from the late sixteenth century, the Wuzazu, describes the nine different sons of the dragon, each represented in unique forms used as ornaments based on their characteristics.

These illustrations are loosely inspired by the descriptions found in the texts.

CHIWEN

Chiwen, one of the Dragon King's nine sons, loved to perch high above the world, always watching the horizon. With an eye for distant dangers and a habit of climbing rooftops, he became the perfect guardian of buildings. To put his talents to good use (and stop him from startling the neighbors), the Dragon King placed his image on rooftops, where Chiwen continues his silent vigil, ever-watchful for approaching trouble.

CHAOFENG

Chaofeng is the adventurous and bold son who loves the thrill of high places and the touch of the wind. Curious and fearless, he not only guards rooftops and public spaces but is also tasked with keeping order and balance in the world. His carved image on roof corners stands as a vigilant protector, warding off evil and ensuring harmony wherever he watches.

BiXi

Sturdy and wise, BiXi has a powerful, tortoise-like shell and a quiet strength. Known for his ability to carry immense weight, his image often appears beneath stone tablets, grave markers, and towering steles. Though strong, BiXi also has a thoughtful side and is said to enjoy literature, giving him a quiet dignity as he bears the weight of history.

FuXi

FuXi is the scholar among the Dragon King’s sons, with a deep love for the written word. He’s often found in places where knowledge is treasured — on book bindings, in libraries, and on the shelves of scholars. Wherever learning is valued, FuXi’s quiet, guiding presence is near.

Yazi

Yazi, the seventh son, was born for battle. Fierce and fearless, he took great joy in combat and possessed the heart of a warrior. Recognizing this, the Dragon King placed his image on swords, hilts, and armor. His fierce expression is meant to inspire courage in warriors and strike fear into their enemies — a symbol of strength and valor.

Pulao

Though small in size, Pulao has a mighty roar — especially when startled by the whales of the sea, which he fears greatly. His thundering cry became famous, and so his image was cast on large bells. The bell’s striker is sometimes carved in the shape of a whale, ensuring Pulao's roar echoes loud and true whenever it's struck.

Suanmi

Suanmi, guardian of fire, is known for his love of smoke and flame. He was entrusted with watching over sacred fires and teaching their importance. His image can be found at the base of Buddhist thrones, on incense burners, and near ceremonial flames — wherever fire is honored and respected.

QiuNiu

QiuNiu is known for his love of music and the arts. His image often decorates traditional instruments, especially the two-stringed, moon-shaped fiddle. Wherever beautiful melodies fill the air, you can imagine QiuNiu’s gentle spirit bringing harmony and joy to the music.

BIAN

Bian is the fierce and wise guardian of justice. Revered for his vigilance and fairness, his image is placed over prison gates and court entrances to watch over disputes and keep order. With a strong sense of right and wrong, Bian ensures the guilty remain confined and that fairness prevails.

Budai, The Laughing Buddha

Budai is the nickname for the historical Chinese figure Qiec. The name "Budai" translates to "cloth sack," referring to the bag he is often shown carrying as he meanders about. Known for his cheerful disposition, humorous nature, and eccentric lifestyle, Budai is frequently depicted with a smile or laughter, earning him the title "Laughing Buddha."

Budai figurines come in various colors, each with its own significance:

Yellow/Gold symbolizes Prosperity.

White represents Innocence.

Red embodies Vitality.

Blue reflects the Boundless and Heavenly aspects of his character.

Green signifies Nature and Balance.

Brown stands for Humility.

Black symbolizes Enlightenment.
